January 30th homework

Harris Summary:
In his article "Composing Behaviors of One-and Multi-Draft Writers", Harris attempts to explain the difference between one-draft and multi-draft writers. He argues the advantages and disadvantages of each and gives examples of different people who write in the two ways and explains a study he did on them given a writing topic and an hour to do it.
Response:
I think that I am more likely a one draft writer because I tend to wait till the last minute to write and write my whole paper and going through it at the end and making changes. According to Harris some disadvantages that I might face because of my tendency to be a one-draft writing are is the I cut myself off from further exploration and eliminate the possibility of searching for a better options.
Reflection:
I thought this article wasn't that interesting because it was kind of repetitive but I did think it was kind to compare the two types of writing and seeing the advantages and disadvantages. It might be helpful to me because knowing the disadvantages of my style of writing may help me the next time I have a writing assignment. I agree with the advantages and disadvantages that Harris says about both types of writing.

Ransom Summary:
In her article "How Do I Write", Ransom describes that way that she writes when she did a study on herself on how she writes. She analyzes herself with a time constraint and writes down her thoughts while she writes. Ransom discovers that time constraints help her stay focused but they also cause her to make little mistakes in her writing.
Other Questions to Consider:
I thought it was interesting how she was able to study herself and come to conclusions about her writing. I personally have never taken notes while I was writing so I'm not sure if this happens to me or not.
Reflection:
I thought this was interesting because she was able to come up with some good conclusions about her writing. This could be helpful to me if I ever wanted to study my own writing. I agree with what she concluded about her writing I think if I were to do something like this I would conclude similar things.

January 27th homework

Summary
In her article "Tuning, Tying, and Training Texts", Tomlinson tells eight different stories about different metaphors that are used when people are revising.  She is arguing that we should use all the different strategies together because when you only use one strategy it is only using part of the revision process.
QD
1. I think she says this because metaphors shouldn't always be assumed to be correct.
2. A metaphor can help you when writing but shouldn't be your only focus when you are writing.
3. The sculpting metaphor because I usually start by write my whole paper and then go back  and revise it and make it better is different areas.
4. I think that should did go a little far because it is always possible to go back and fix your writing no matter what.
5. I think I use some metaphors but I mainly write my whole paper then edit it.
Summary
I thought that it was interesting because she showed us different metaphors and examples. This could be helpful to when writing if i were to think back to it when I write.

January 25th homework

Summary
In her article "Decision and Revisions: The Planning Strategies of a Publishing Writer", Berkenkotter does research on Donald Murray and has him record and write down everything he does while he is writing. She discovers the many different things that he thinks while writing and the thought processes he goes through.
QD
1. I thought that he was very good about his process of writing and has everything together while writing and I feel that I do not have that same ability while I am writing.
2. Murray didn't realize how much he relates to his audience while writing until after the study, I think that I think about the purpose of the paper and what needs to be in it more than I think about the audience.
3. That the writer moves back and fourth between different steps of the writing process while writing.
AE
1. When I am writing I spend it finding ideas to help me with what I am saying then writing and stopping to do research while I write then edit and revise. I don't have a lot of writing experience which is why it may take me longer to figure out how to put my writing together.
MM
I learned about planning and revising and a more effective way of doing it with writing and this can help me when I have to write to try and incorporate it into my writing.
Summary
I thought that this was interesting because she explained how she did the study and shared examples of what he thought while writing with us. This will be helpful to me because it gives me a new way to go about my writing and a new process to follow. This ideas were different from my experiences while writing.

January 23rd homework

My Summary
In his article "What Is It We Do When We Write Articles Like This One-and How Can We Get Students to Join Us?", Kliene discusses how writers collect information and put it in their writing. He discusses and hunting and gathering method and studies teachers from different fields. In the end he decides that they wrote "Different in that they recalled processes that varied not only according to discipline, but also according to personality and task." (pg.30)

QD
1. This lines up with how I would write research papers.
3.The sources don't play a big role in the professionals writing and they usually play a big role in my writing. The differences are how much the sources play in the writing.
4. I would try to not make the sources so important.
Summary
I did not find this article very interesting I wasn't very interested in what it was about and it wasn't anything to new to me. Sense it was kind of stuff that wasn't interesting to me  I am not sure if I will think of it while writing and use it to help me. I can agree with what he is saying with the different ways of writing.

January 18th homework

Allen Response
In her article The Inspired Writer Vs. The Real Writer, Sarah Allen attempts to explain how to be a good writer it does not have to be easy for you and that it does not come easily to all good writers. She argues that it can take help and advice from other to help you to become a better writer and not to be afraid if what might be thought about your writing. She says that "we must continue to practice" because "for all the misunderstandings, all the fears and so-called failings that happen among the writer and paper and reader, there's always another white page, and there's always more to say."
Allen Question

My experiences compare to Allen's discussion because I have used my teacher and peers for advice before and it has helped me to write better.

Allen Summary
I thought this was interesting because it talked about how to be a good writer it does not have to come naturally which made me feel better because it does not come naturally to me. This will be helpful to me because I can remember what she said if I am not confident while I am writing and take her advice. I agree with this because she had her own experiences to prove what she was saying.

Murray Response
In his Article All Writing is Autobiography, Murray attempts to say that when you are writing it is coming from past that you may build on and all writing is always a little fictional. He argues that "we are all autobiographical in the way we write"(pg.58) because when you write it grows from ideas of our past.
GRR
When I was taught to write I was never really told how "personal" I should make my writing so I didn't really have much guidance with how I should write in that way but I was told the basics steps of writing my paper and what needed to be included.
QD
1.The construct that Murray is mainly trying to say we should reconsider is where all people get their ideas when writing.
3.This article is different from different scholarly articles in the way that Murray explains how he writes and gets his ideas and how ideas don't always come from another source. I think Murray wanted to break out of the "usual rules" because he wanted to show that all all writing doesn't just come from other peoples ideas.
4.This is similar to other articles because Murray does quote other authors and use them to show other examples of how he is correct and prove a theory about writing.
5.I think that if he is right then I would think about writing differently because it would help me to get started and think about things that have happened and I would be able to build off of those ideas which would be easier and they would encourage me to try and write in a different way.
MM
This could help me when writing because it would help me to look at writing in a more positive way and also it would change my thoughts on they way that writing is "suppose" to be done.
Murray Summary
I thought this article was interesting because it had many interesting ideas that I never heard before. I'm not sure if it will be helpful to me or not because it was a little confusing in some areas about what exactly he was trying to say. This compares to experiences I have had when I have had to write a about something that had changed my life so I had to think back into my past and use that idea. I'm not sure if I am completely convinced that Murray is right about every kind of writing being this way.

Dawkins Refelction
In his article Teaching Punctuation as a Rhetorical Tool, Dawkins attempts to explain the different ways and reasons people use punctuation in certain ways. He argues that using punctuation in a different ways can give a different impression on the reader of what the writer is trying to say and that you do not have to follow that basic punctuation rules because he thinks that writing should be looked at as rhetorical meaning " it has to do with choices that writers make to influence readers." (pg.139)
GRR
1.The treehouse made of wood scrapes and cardboard made a great place for my sister to play with her friends.
2.My sisters treehouse that was made of wood scrapes and cardboard made a great place for her to play with her friends.
3.My sister treehouse made a great place for her to play with her friends; it was made of wood scraps and cardboard.
QD
2. He claims that there is a easier system that good writers use, that the other system gives writers that chance to use rhetorical effects, and that this is a way teachers could teach easier.
3. Raising is something that a writer does when they use certain punctuation to make something they are saying more effective in and lowering is when a writer is not trying to use punctuation to make something stick out more but using it only where it is necessary.
5.I know that you don't "have" to use punctuation only when you are told to and you can use it to better help readers to understand what you are saying in other areas of your writing.
6.When I am writing I mostly ignore punctuation and put it in the places that I know its need but I don't think to much about it. When I read Dawkins he made me think of it in a different way than just something that I have to put certain areas.
MM
I think that my teacher wants me in to think of things in different ways in order to improve my writing and learning different ways to use punctuation could help me to improve my writing in some ways. By reading this article I learned that I can use punctuation in a rhetorical way not just how textsbooks tell me to use it.
Dawkins Summary
I thought this article was interesting because I never noticed different ways that punctuation is used that are the ways that we are told we have to use it. This will probably be helpful to me because I can start thinking about how I use punctuation more. I agree with Dawkins because he had very good evidence and ways of explaining what he is saying.

January 13th

 Summary:
In his article "Annoying Ways People Use Sources", Stedman explains the different ways that "annoy him" about how people use quotations and citations when writing. Stedmen uses many different examples of how people incorrectly use quotes, citations, and sources and shows how to fix those mistakes when writing. In his essay he uses many different examples of writing in order to be able to relate to any kind of audience.

Questions:
1. Stedman's advice is more about how to incorporate things into your writing so it flows with the paper and Greene, Kantz, and Porter give advice on concepts and constructs of writing.
2.In the past when I was taught to use sources I was taught to cite people work the same way that Stedman describes but I was never really taught where I should include them or where I should include quotations.
3.My views about how to use sources before reading this article weren't very different than what Stedman describes but it did help me know where to use certain things in my writing.

My thoughts:
I thought that this was interesting because it showed the wrong way to use citations then the right way with examples. This article will be helpful to me because when I am writing and using citations I can think back to this article and remember the correct way to do these things. My own experiences are similar because in a few of his example I was able to think of a time where I might have done something wrong and also a few times where I had done things the right way. I agree with what Stedman is saying in this article when reading the incorrect example I could see how he would call the mistakes "annoying" and when he showed the correct way to do them it was so much better to read.

January 11th homework

In his article "Intertexuality and the Discourse Community", Porter attempts to explain intertextuality and how it connects to "discourse community" and its "implications for composition." He argues that "intertexuality suggests that our goal should be to help students learn to write for the discourse communities they choose to join" (pg.94) because by doing this them students can learn what is expected of them and use that to help them in writing.

GRR
When I am writing I get my ideas from the different ideas that are said in class and by my teachers. For advice and feedback I like to ask my classmates and friends and professors. For assistance I like to look at other peoples work to get an idea of how I want to set mine up or build my own ideas off of.

QD
2. I do not think that intertext makes individual writers less important because even though the texts are built on each other and refering to each other I think the individual still is saying something important and maybe saying it in a different way.
3.I think Porter calls antonomous writers "romantic" because they are not writing in a "social context" or "community" writers.
4. Before reading this article I assumed that writing should be evaluated based on what is told is needed in your writing and showing your understanding for what your saying which is how my writing has been evaluated in the past.
5.I think that based on his idea of intertextuality that no article is original so in that case his article isn't original either.
6.According to Porter the harm in believing that writing is individual, isolated, and heroic is that all people when writing are borrowing ideas from other writers so therefore the writing can not be those things.

MM
Porters study has changed my view of writing a little but I still believe that people can write things that are original. If I adopted his notion of writers and writing it may change the way I write.

I thought that this article was interesting to here Porters view on intertexuality and it pointed out many things that I have never thought about before. The article may not be helpful to me because I am not sure if I completely agree with what Porter is saying. The ideas that Porter is pointing out compare to my own experiences because I am sure that I have written things and he could point out the same things in the things in my writing as he did in the examples in the book.

January 9th homework

In her article Reading Games, Rosenberg attempts to tell the audience how rhetorical reading works and how to become a better reader. She argues how people don't understand what they are reading because they don't understand why they have to read what that are reading most of the time.
I thought that Rosenberg's article was very interesting because it taught me different ways to understand a reading that I have not done before. This article probably will be very helpful to me because it has many good methods of getting more interested into your reading and ways of understand what you read that I will use.

In her article Kantz attempts to explain how students are looking at writing as something more complicated than it really is and describe how students can look at writing in a different way. She argues that students don't look at writing in a rhetorical way  because the professor does not explain to them how they should approach the writing and the students just look for all the facts. I enjoyed this article because Kantz had many good points and explained how to go about writing rhetorically very well. The article will definitely be helpful to me because she explains in detail how you should approach writing a paper. This related to my experiences because I always approach writing papers in the same way that Shirly does so I can understand it. I agree with what Kantz is saying in this article because I had similar experiences in writing and agree with how she says students should approach writing.

To me rhetoric means the way someone convinces another person and helps them to understand what they are saying and think about it in the same way.  Academic articles are rhetoric because the author is trying to persuade the reader and teach them about whatever the article is about.

DQ:
1. Kantz is saying that facts, opinions, and arguments are actually all similar and they are only different when the person reading them thinks of them in that way.
2. Students always look at textbooks as the truth and automatically believe what they are saying. When a student is reading a textbook they assume that what the textbook says is going to be the truth and they don't consider the fact that it may not be true. I feel that I understand this now and will try to apply it to my reading.
3. Yes, she taught me that you can make your own argument about something and still use sources to support the argument without using the argument that the sources have already made.
6.I think that Kantz idea's will probably help me when I am doing research and writing because when I am writing a paper I will now think of the things that she has said that try to apply them to my writing.

MM:
Kantz is trying to analyze using rhetoric methods when you are writing things like persuasive papers. It would be useful for me to use this when I am writing different types of papers.

January 6th homework

In his article Argument as Conversation, Stuart Greene attempts to teach about how to write in a different way to new writers. He argues that having an argument is a part of life  and the way we argue relates to the way we write because you take many of the same steps when you argue an issue as when you write about something.
GRR: I define argument as a difference in opinion between two people who are trying to convince each other that their own opinion is correct. In an academic setting i think that an argument is like a problem trying to be solved. The difference between the two is that in a academic setting and argument will be proved with an answer more often than a social argument.
Questions for Discussion: 1. According to Green reading is important way for college student to get information for  any writing projects that they might be given.
2. Greene quotes the passage again to show how argument is on going and has many different sides. Burke is saying how arguments that are made can also relate to a different argument and different writings can turn into other writings. I would say that it present writing in a good way how writings can relate to other writings.
3.Framing is the ability to use other people’s disagreements to your advantage to get your point across. The metaphor that underlies it is "describing the lens, or perspective, from which writers present their arguments."
Applying and Exploring Ideas
2. Greene's article does represent a conversation with the reader. He frames his argument by coming from each direction of the argument to prove his point. Yes, I would say that Greene practices what he preaches in "Argument as a conversation."

I thought that the reading was interesting because it presented the ideas in ways that I have never thought of. This article will be helpful to me because it taught me different things about writing that i didn't know before and new ways to go about writing something. The ideas that Greene presents in the article are similar to some of my experiences because he stated the ways that I go about writing when I write and also related to how arguments have happened in my experience.  I agree with the things that Greene says in the article because after reading them and understanding what he says the things he says are true to my experiences.

What Writing Means To Me

I think that writing is a easy way for people to get their thoughts out in the open and see them in a different way. When people put their thoughts on paper it is a good way to express and see what they are thinking and it may help them understand it a little better. Writing is a way to share your thoughts with other people and help them understand what you are thinking.
